Muir Woods: Spending the Day by – and in – Really Big Trees
It’s the end of the week and the beginning of a 3-day weekend! Anyone else excited and have some fun plans for the holiday? One great thing to do over 3-day weekends is check out some of America’s gorgeous National Parks, such as the Muir Woods National Monument Park, which is located just 11 miles north of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco.
Muir Woods is a fun park to walk around in because it has easy to hike trails and some pretty awesome, BIG trees. It’s also an easy day trip to do from San Francisco.
Though Northern California is home to other national parks with even BIGGER Redwood trees, those are several hours away from San Francisco, making this park an easy compromise if you’re short on time to see some of the rugged wilderness of Northern California, plus the vibrant city of nearby San Francisco.

Hi Erik, I have a feeling once I visit those places (crossing my fingers for at least one of them this winter) I’ll probably agree with you but so far I haven’t had time to make it to see the REALLY big Redwoods yet. Agree that when visiting San Fran, this place is great to visit since it’s so close and has great walking trails. I had a lot of fun there during a San Fran weekend trip. 🙂

I’ll be honest, I stopped at Muir Woods after visiting both Kings Canyon/ Sequoia and Redwoods National Parks, and I was quite a bit underwhelmed. I would expect that for people who are just visiting San Francisco, I would encourage this short trip as it’s the best opportunity to see the coastal redwoods.
